Are you looking for the best way to keep your pup comfortable during their heat cycle? Or maybe you have a dog that is incontinent for some reason? Look no further! We've picked the best diapers (for either male or female) dogs that need a little extra help.
These innovative diapers are designed to keep your pup comfortable and safe during their heat cycle. They are made with breathable, lightweight fabric that is soft and gentle on your pup’s skin. The adjustable waistband and leg openings provide a secure and comfortable fit. The leak-proof inner layer prevents any messes from getting on your floor or furniture. And the waterproof outer layer helps keep your pup dry and comfortable.
These diapers are also incredibly easy to use. Just put them on your pup and they’ll be ready to go. No more worrying about messes or uncomfortable heat cycles. The diapers are also designed to be easily washed or disposed of - depending on which style you choose.
Yes! I own many of these for my dogs. I actually use them for both male and female dogs. No, males do not "go into heat" but female dogs do, and sometimes I need a little extra to keep my males in line when I do not want one of my female dogs to be bred.
Female dog diapers cover their entire bottom - kind of the way you might picture bloomers on a baby/toddler. Male diapers are more like a band that goes just around their middle. It does not cover their rear end. Either version need to be removed for them to go potty outside. Males can still poop with their diaper on - but they cannot pee. Females cannot do either without soiling their diaper.
I personally use the washable versions. I'm just too cheap to buy disposables. I'm sure they work just fine - but so does my washing machine - and I can reuse them many, many times before they need to be repurchased. I think the ones I currently own are 4 or 5 years old and don't show any wear at all.
Male diapers are also great if you have a male that likes to mark territory in your house by peeing on your furniture! In my experience, when this has happened, I make my male wear a diaper for a few days - and he stops. Yes - he ends up peeing on himself (most of it gets absorbed by the diaper but he does get some on himself) and he doesn't like it - and so he stops. In my house - it happens when one of my females goes into heat and he feels like he has to remind all of us that he is the male of the house. Whatever! ;)
I imagine these would be useful if you have a dog that urinates when they get too excited. I don't have any dogs like this now - but I have in the past - before I knew these diapers existed. Well, now I know if I ever need them!
I just thought of one other use for these diapers: if you are traveling with your dog - especially if they are very young or ill, I would use a diaper rather than allowing your dog to go potty in public. When dogs/puppies are very young, or if your dog is ill, it's just not a great idea to take your dog where other dogs have been. It is so easy for them to pick up illnesses from dogs that have been there before you. You may never even see those dogs - but if your dog smells their urine or poop that has sickness in it - it can make your dog sick. Just the smell (really it's the germs in what they left behind - but seriously! I've seen dogs get parvo and other awful diseases like this.) You are MUCH better off putting a diaper on your dog until you get home and know that they are safe from other sick pups.
So, in our review below, I did share some disposable diapers. I've never used them but they get great reviews on Amazon. I use the ordinary (not stylish) male and female reusables and they are great. I do think the stylish ones are cute - I just haven't purchased them yet. The last item I review are booster pads to put inside your reusable diapers. I've never used those either but I haven't needed to. I don't have that much mess with my dogs - but I thought they were a great idea if you need them.

Diapers for Dogs in Heat - FAQs
It can be hard to know which type of diaper is best for your female dog in heat. Or which diaper to get if your male is marking territory! With all the different brands, sizes, and materials available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is the right choice.
We understand that you want to make sure your pet is comfortable and safe, so we've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about dog diapers for females in heat. That way, you can know more about the best options for your pup.
Should I put diapers on my dog in heat?
It is not a necessity to put diapers on your dog when they are in heat - but it will help keep your home cleaner. Some female dogs keep themselves very clean when they are in heat - so clean that you may not even know she is cycling if you're not closely paying attention. Other dogs, not so much! If you have one of the second kind - yes - put the diaper on. Just be sure if your dog has time to go outside to relieve herself that you take the diaper off. She will not be able to potty with the diaper on without soiling it.
What can I use as a diaper for my dog in heat?
The best option for a diaper for your dog in heat is a specially designed canine diaper. These diapers are designed to fit snugly around your dog's waist and have a built-in absorbent pad to help contain any messes. They also come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit your dog's specific body shape. Additionally, you may want to consider getting a belly band, which is a band of fabric that wraps around your dog's midsection and is designed to hold the diaper in place.
You can also use a pair of toddler sized underpants. They won't be super absorbent - but they will work. You will need to cut a tail hole in the underwear so that your dog's tail is free to wag and show you how happy they are!
Will a dog pee in a diaper?
Yes, most dogs will pee in a diaper. Even though dogs are generally very clean animals and do not like to soil their own bedding or areas where they sleep - when they gotta go, they gotta go! And they will "go" in the diaper. So - if your dog is wearing the diaper because you cannot allow them to potty outside because you are traveling or for some other short term reason, a diaper is a good alternative.
If you are looking for a way to potty train your puppy, diapers are not the best option as they can don't give a dog a real experience of "holding it." There are better methods of potty training such as crate training, positive reinforcement, and reward-based training.
How do I stop my dog from bleeding everywhere in heat?
If it is your goal to eventually breed your female dog, then dog diapers are a great way to keep your home clean during her heat cycle.
But, if you never have plans of having puppies with your female, the best way to stop your dog from bleeding during heat is to spay her. Spaying is the surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries and is a safe and effective way to prevent heat cycles and eliminate the mess associated with them.
How long is a female dog's heat cycle?
The average length of a female dog's heat cycle is between 2-3 weeks, but it can last anywhere from 1-4 weeks. During a heat cycle, the female dog may experience vaginal bleeding and increased levels of hormones, both of which can cause mood changes and behavioral changes. They are also very welcoming to any male dog that may come visiting! They are not usually very selective.
During this time, it is important to keep the dog away from intact male dogs to avoid any unwanted pregnancies. Note: male dogs can SMELL your female in heat from almost a mile away. If you do not want your female to have puppies - it is important to have her spayed (surgical removal of female reproductive organs) or keep her protected from intact males. Dogs have been known to reproduce through fences and other barriers! YOU must watch your female very closely if you do not want a pregnancy.
Can female dogs poop with a diaper on?
Yes, female dogs can still poop with a diaper on, but the diaper will "catch" all of the poop. Female dog diapers are designed to absorb moisture and contain solid waste, so they can be a great way to keep your female dog's messes contained.
However, it is important to change the diaper regularly to ensure your dog's comfort and hygiene. Additionally, you should always check to make sure the diaper is not too tight or too loose, as an ill-fitting diaper can cause discomfort and skin irritation.
How often do you change a dog's diaper in heat?
It is recommended to change a dog's diaper at least twice a day when it is in heat. And, it is a good idea to remove the diaper when you are taking Fifi out to go potty. Just be aware - male dog's can smell that Fifi is in heat from VERY far away and will do their best to come and visit. Dog's noses can smell thing that our human noses cannot!
It is also important to keep Fifi's private area clean and dry to prevent skin irritation and infection. If the area is particularly soiled, it is best to change the diaper more frequently.
Can you use belly bands on female dogs?
No - belly bands will protect your house from the blood that is expelled during a female dog's heat cycle, nor will it collect urine or poop from an incontinent female dog. Belly bands are only effective on male dogs.
How many days does a dog stay in heat and bleed?
The average length of a dog's heat cycle is about 18-21 days, although it can vary from dog to dog. During this time, your dog will usually bleed for around 5-9 days. It is also normal for your dog to experience some swelling and discharge during this time. Some female dogs get moody, too.
What should I avoid when my dog is in heat?
When your dog is in heat, you should avoid allowing her to interact with intact male dogs. During this time, she is at a much higher risk of becoming pregnant, so it is important to keep her away from any unaltered males.
Additionally, you should avoid taking her to the dog park or other areas where she could come into contact with other dogs. It is also important to keep her in a secure area of your home, as she may try to escape in search of a mate.
Lastly, you should make sure to monitor her closely and provide her with plenty of love and attention during this time.
What are the first signs of Pyometra?
Pyometra is an infection that affects a female dog's reproductive organs and that can be deadly if not treated. Female dogs that have been spayed will not get pyometra.
The first signs of Pyometra can include increased thirst, increased urination, lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, and vaginal discharge. If left untreated, Pyometra can lead to sepsis, organ failure, and death. It is important to seek veterinary care immediately if any of these signs are observed in your pet.
